How to retrofit critical parts without compromising performance
Your car’s annual maintenance is already scheduled, and you regularly update your digital systems. But in production environments, we still invest too little in the timely renewal of our machinery. Yet thinking ahead can make all the difference when you want to retrofit critical parts without compromising performance.
“Simply replacing a part when it breaks” is still a common approach among manufacturing companies. But retrofit is not an emergency fix. It is a smart choice to keep your machinery reliable, efficient and ready for the future.
A sustainable solution
Retrofitting is also a sustainable way to keep well-functioning machines operational, as our colleagues Mark van Kuijlenburg, engineer and project leader, and Robin Verhoeven, account manager, know from experience. “Often, the foundation of a machine is still in good condition. Frames last a long time, while rotating parts wear faster or control systems become outdated and turn into weak points.”
Mark and Robin often notice that companies quickly start considering complete machine replacement. “But sometimes only the control system is failing, or specific parts are no longer available. A completely new machine is not always the answer. Retrofit can be: it is about modernising your machinery.”
Keeping machines up to date
Retrofit is sometimes confused with overhaul. At MEVI, retrofit means more than overhaul. While overhaul mainly focuses on extending the service life and operating time of parts, retrofit goes a step further. We bring machines fully up to date. From new control systems to replacing or reproducing critical parts. In our workshops, but also on site, we can even rebuild complete machines.
“It always starts with the question: what does the machine need to be able to do?” says Mark. “That is why we like to visit the customer and see the situation for ourselves. How does the production process work, what are the requirements, and how long does the machine need to keep running? From there, we determine which parts need to be replaced and how best to approach the project. This can be done with existing components or newly manufactured parts.”
Whether a machine is brought to our workshop or an installation remains on the customer’s site, MEVI can take care of the entire retrofit process from A to Z. From engineering to ordering or manufacturing parts ourselves, right through to assembly.
Planning ahead prevents downtime
Retrofit requires planning. That is why it is smart to take action before something breaks down. Robin explains: “By thinking ahead about replacement and maintenance, you prevent unexpected downtime. And unexpected downtime is often much more expensive than scheduling a retrofit and keeping the right spare parts in stock. We are happy to help draw up spare parts lists for critical components.” With proper planning, production can continue running until the scheduled retrofit takes place.
A second life for your machine
Where companies used to choose a new machine more quickly, there is now growing attention for sustainability and cost awareness. Retrofit gives machines a second, or even third, life. Especially in complex production environments that run 24/7, this is a smart investment that pays off in the longer term. It is important to look not only at the technical investment, but also at the service life of machines and components, replacement cycles and the impact on production.
